Three million. Three million what, you ask? Three million people (in the US alone) are estimated to be actively engaged in the practice commonly referred to as “prepping.”
“Preppers,” also known as “survivalists” have created a well thought out emergency preparedness plan, and are diligently working to set aside food, water and other essential and indispensable supplies in the event that S.H.T.F. (Sh!t Hits the Fan) or T.E.O.T.W.A.W.K.I. (The End of The World As We Know It).
In other words, they are preparing for doomsday……THE APOCOLYPSE!
Ask these individuals what it means to “prep” and you will find that it means different things to different people. Their answers will likely depend upon the scope or scale of the events that they are preparing for, and so too will the size of their reserved supplies.
What Are “They” Even Prepping For?
Some “preppers” are content with compiling “just enough” to endure a local, short-term disrupt
ion to emergency services and power grids such as: tornados, hurricanes, flash floods, earthquakes, wild fires, or local civil unrest (rioting and looting).
Other, more serious “preppers” are stockpiling and storing larger quantities of supplies that w
ill allow them to subsist during longer-term global or international disasters such as: economic/financial collapse, World War III, solar flares, an asteroid colliding with the earth, and even alien invasion.
Now, I know what you are thinking. “Asteroids? Alien Invasion? WWIII? That sounds crazy!”
But, before passing judgment, stop for a minute and consider the possibilities.
No, really…given the recent increasing frequency of natural disasters and our current social and political climate, is it really all that unlikely that any of these events could take place? Ok, ok….maybe not alien invasion.
By the way, have you seen the movie Independence Day, or the more recently released Arrival? Just sayin…
But seriously, pause for a moment to reflect on the wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks (foreign and domestic), civil rioting and looting that we have most recently been witness to.
Do I Really Need to Prep?
However credible you view the likelihood of any of these potential threats, whether real or imagined, “preppers” are simply acting on their innate senses to provide for and protect themselves and the ones they love.
It may seem extreme, but is that so crazy? Is their sense of responsibility to provide for and protect their family any strong than yours?
You’ve heard all of the cliche’s. “It’s a war of attrition.” “It’s a zero sum game.” “Only the strong survive.” “Every man for himself.”
Maybe, just maybe, they aren’t so crazy after all…
Maybe it’s not such a bad idea to have a plan…
Maybe it’s not such a bad idea to at the very least, store a B.O.B. (Bug out Bag) with a few essential supplies, tools and basic first-aid kit.
After all, chances are that when S.H.T.F., those who have spent their time, money and effort to prepare probably aren’t going to open up their doors when those among us who are not prepared come-a-knocking.
